A day in the life of an ‘Educator’
Throughout our childhood and till our adulthood, educators or teachers play a big role in most of our lives. Especially from the age of 4 and till the age of 18, our entire life revolves around them. We are the most frantic, fragile and a little obnoxious during these times. Now you may feel a little uneasy or hostile towards my use of the word obnoxious but, do you know any teenager who was not troublesome? There are exceptions but, have you seen any?
Teachers have played an enormous role in all of our lives and they still are playing that role in somebody else’s life. Each one of us has experienced this differently, for example, I was always the friendly and kind type but, somehow I changed during high school (trying to add some thrill into my plain boring life) which is incredibly normal! This fact also changed how my teachers perceived me, I was the slow-witted middle child who had trouble scoring marks but this was ignored because there weren’t many happy kids back then and I sure was the happiest! Most of my life teachers were kind, helpful but I was mocked too, not by the students but by the teachers. So, they definitely played a big role but I am not sure if the impact was entirely positive.
Different people, different experiences
I recently started working at LearnWithYoutube, about which I have already talked in my first blog. It is an e-learning platform which aims at providing education through digital means to every single student on this planet. About 2 months ago, they started their classroom programme, called E-Vidya, a great place for interactive and fun learning!
Their journey till now has been pretty fruitful and in this blog, I will be sharing with you what a day in the life of one of their educators is all about!
Let’s begin!
According to this educator, learning is an ongoing process which takes place throughout our lives!
Ms Shayantani is a beloved educator at E-vidya whose compassion towards teaching has no bound. She is a superhuman who is a public relations officer in the morning and an educator by night! She juggles her passion and duty throughout the day and is determined to not give up on these kids!
A typical day for her starts at 8:00 A.M. where she gets ready for her first class of the day. She teaches English to 5th graders and art & craft, which is a combined group activity for every grade. She takes her first class at 9:00 A.M. where she teaches English, after this, she takes a class around 1 P.M. where she teaches art & craft. Mind you all, these classes happen 5 days a week. I don’t remember doing art & craft for 5 days straight and that too every week!
A little F.A.Q. about these art & craft classes, nothing out of the ordinary is used, only the resources available at home! Ms Shayantani explained the entire purpose of these classes, which is to provide fun and to explore their inner creativity. She mentioned that whatever is planned for the activity, the kids come out with different versions of the same thing!
Reminiscing, she told me that there is a student named ‘Komal’, who is proactive in all the class activities as well as in reminding ma’am to take the class in times when Ms Shayantani gets a little caught up in other things. She also added that Komal is only 8 years old! If you don’t find this adorable then I am questioning your sanity.
Around 4 P.M, she assigns homework to all the students which is submitted usually by 7 P.M, followed by evaluation of the homework after which she gives everyone feedback. Around this time, you may think that she is done with the day but, you are so wrong, as soon as she is done with all the above activities including her job which ends at 8 P.M, she starts preparing for the next day! If you are at a loss of words then it’s okay because I was too. Also, I forgot to mention that she has many a time taken class during meetings and sometimes she even had to leave for office in the middle of the day.
She is the quintessential superhuman- hard working, kind and passionate!
When I asked Ms Shayantani about the struggles of balancing her job and her passion, she swiftly replied that even though it gets a little hard, she is able to manage it just fine. The excitement to prepare material for the kids and to teach them overpowers it all! This is not all, her plans include a bachelor’s in education after which she would like to teach primary kids. I did ask her if after all of this she’ll still be a part of E-Vidya, to which she proudly replied,
“E-Vidya is close to my heart, even if I am only able to devote one hour per day, I will do it, I will never leave it.”
It’s overwhelming to see such passion in real life and I am glad that I get to interact with such amazing people!
